I’m looking for a complete language immersion program in a spanish-speaking country, and the Experiment in International living looks like it has a lot to offer. Im wondering whether or not the language immersion is legitimate, meaning i would be speaking spanish the entire time. Also, i don’t want it to be a tourist-y thing with corny scavenger hunts. Any suggestion? I have also looked into the "Amigos de las Americas Program" and if you know anything about that, then please share. Thanks.

All immersion programs would basically put you among the community, so yes, you would speak Spanish the entire time. The exception might be when they provide you with the basic information for emergency or contact. Other than that, unless there are natives there who can speak English, I doubt you will hear much of anything besides Spanish. However, keep in mind that Experiment in International Living includes community service, language training, ecology, travel, arts, living with host families and participate in activities with your group. Therefore, chances are you will have to do some "tourist-y thing," though maybe without the scavenger hunt.

As for the Amigos de las Americas, it’s pretty similar, except that this program is mostly volunteer. You would help build houses, dig wells, distribute foods, or other similar activities. these are hard work, so if you don’t like them, don’t go.

Both of these programs are more community service-based. If you enjoy volunteering, these are great opportunities for you to make a difference. However, if you just want to study the language and culture, then you should look for other, more academic-based programs. My suggestion would be to take a look at www.studyabroad.com or www.worldwide.edu and search for the program you like.

Hope this helps!

Our Intensive Spanish Program is designed for both university students and travelers looking to learn Spanish rapidly, well, and in an immersion environment. With an average class size of 5-8 students, you will receive personalized attention from professors and ample opportunity to participate. Daily lessons emphasize a range of skills including: listening, reading, writing, oral comprehension, culture, current events and history.

Classes take place at the language center of the University of Buenos Aires, a few blocks from the Congress building and downtown Buenos Aires. Course materials (textbook and workbook) and group activities are included. University credit is available for all levels and courses. Students receive a certificate at the end of their course that can be mailed directly to their home university. This certificate states the number of hours and course levels completed, final percentage grade and is complete with the logo of the university.
