In english, if we are excited about something we say that we are looking forward to do something. My spanish exchange keeps saying ‘Tengo muchos ganas…..’ and when I looked it up in the dictionary, it translated ‘I have many desires….’. Is this the spanish way of saying that they are looking forward to something??? I couldn’t find it anywhere on line and when I looked up ‘looking forward’, it said that it is ‘espero… or ‘no veo la hora…’. Please explain!
Tengo ganas means I feel like or I want .
examples
Tengo ganas de jugar futbol : I feel like playing soccer or I want to play soccer
Tengo muchas ganas de verte : I really want to see you
looking forward can be said as esperando anciosamente but that is not too common(more like wording you would use in a letter but not in person). It would be better to say I am anxious to do X.
example
Estoy muy ancioso por conocerte : I am very anxious(looking forward) to meet you.
