Why is Baby First Television trying to make my 8 month old Bi-LiNGUAL?
We subscribe to Baby First Television on Dish Network.
(it’s designed for babies 6 months - 3 years)
A couple of the programs they have on there are teaching the babies Sign Language, which is great!
My nephew is 18 months and knows a lot of sign language.
However, it also tries to teach the baby SPANISH.
Now this annoys me!
My son is 8 MONTHS OLD, he doesn’t even know ENGLISH yet! Why try and confuse them with spanish too?
For Babies and Toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years I would think you would want to teach them their PRIMARY language before adding a secondary language to the mix!
I have no problem whatsoever with my son learning Spanish later down the line .. but right now is NOT a good time!
Does anyone else feel this way?
or do you think teaching a young baby a Secondary language is a good idea?
I don’t think you should teach a baby a Secondary Language when the baby can’t even speak the primary language!
but I’d like to hear both sides .. thanks.
Hey Granola - I turn it on for the ENGLISH. Not the spanish!
and yes, I DO turn it off the second I hear the spanish coming on.
It’s actually a subscription channel we pay for each month. Which makes it even more annoying that they want to clutter up his education with teaching a secondary language he won’t need for at least 10 years.
Yes, Sign Language is a Secondary Language and I’m glad he’s learning it.
It’s a secondary language he will actually use NOW .. not 10 years from now like the Spanish.
Sims .. I am NOT aginst him learning Spanish in the FUTURE when he’s old enough to differentiate the two languages!
Mrs.Mom .. my son has NO REASON to be fluent in both languages.
Yes, it’d be great if he’s bi-lingual when he’s older .. it would definitely come in handy.
But making a Toddler fluent in 2 languages is pointless.
Baby Uber … my son watches 30 minutes a day of television, max! that’s why it’s so annoying if the Spanish is being taught to him during that 30 minutes .. I just think of it as a WASTE. He could have spent that 30 minutes learning ENGLISH .. something he will use NOW.
If you want to teach your kid French, more power to you! I couldn’t care less.
I’m not going to do it.
Babies Uber .. they can teach him numbers and letters at the same time, as long as they are taught in ENGLISH.
A kid isn’t going to confuse letters and numbers like they would Spanish and English.
BIG difference.
That is the most ignorant comment I’ve ever read from you.
AV .. haha. Yeah, you’re bilingual because your parents are foreigners.. you have to be bilingual to survive in this country! (well, if you want to communicate with your parents and the rest of us at the same time)
My husband and I are NOT foreigners and English is OUR primary language.
Juju .. the reason I like the Sign Language is because it could help him communicate with my husband and I. If we learn the same words in sign language as he does, then he can communicate with US before he learns to say the word.
That is something he could use NOW.
The Spanish is something he won’t be using until he is much older. Therefore, I think they should teach Spanish to him when he’s older.
besavatris .. that’s silly. I’m not ‘biting’ anyones head off.
They explain why they feel the way they do .. I counter-respond with why I feel the way I do.
simple simple.
Bradley’s MoM .. re-read my question. I am fine with him learning Spanish when he’s OLDER. I just don’t think it’s a good idea to try and teach him 2 languages at once. I think it would be confusing.
First he needs to learn his primary language before being introduced to a secondary language.
I know he will need to know spanish when he is OLDER .. so he will learn it when he’s OLDER. He’s 8 months old, he needs to learn english so he can communicate with his family.
We’ll worry about the rest of the population and their language when he gets older.
Bradley’s MoM … LOL. I have a Bachelor’s in Biology and half way through getting my Master’s.
I am currently a stay at home mom and will further my education when he starts school.
Thanks.
J and D’s Momma .. yes, he does only watch television for 30 minutes a day.
We subscribe to the channel so that when he does watch his 30 minutes of television it’s going to be something educational and not just ‘Dora the Explorer’ or some other child cartoon.
We don’t want him watching cartoons to kill time .. we want him watching a program designed to teach him something.
The money is not a problem.
I prefer the Baby Network over DVD’s because I have heard bad things about the Baby Einstein DVD’s.
I’ve heard it can actually make a child ‘lose words’ .. which is why it’s so annoying that the Baby Network put out spanish .. not only is he going to lose words, he’s going to confuse words and languages. That’s the problem.
LOL. I have nothing against the ’spanish speaking population’ ..
I live in Southern California .. I deal with them everyday.
You sound quite defensive .. hmm.
Sounds like you dislike the English speaking population.
Hm…I’m fluent in English and Russian, and somewhat fluent in German. My husband’s first language is English as well, but he speaks fluent Arabic. My 3 year old can speak some Russian, and if I speak to him in Russian, he will answer me in his limited Russian, if I talk in English, he speaks in English. We’re not foreigners, but I spent a lot of time in Russia as a teen and my husband thought it was interesting to teach our son some Russian. It’s awesome, my husband has even learned some. We’ve been doing this since he was an infant, and it doesn’t confuse him a bit.
I bought the Muzzy Spanish learning set and was VERY dissapointed. My kids liked watching it, but I didn’t like the story line at all!! Has anyone else watched it and thought the same thing? I don’t want my 3 and 4 yo to learn how to say "I hate him!" or "I hate work!" in Spanish. I don’t even want them to learn to say that in English! And what’s with the whole thing with Corvax kidnaping Silvia"s baby to raise her up to mary him? Anyone else find that disturbing? The only part I did like was the vocabulary builder. That was pretty cool!
My kids didn’t like the games on the cd-rom at all, and they usually love playing computer games.
Is there anyone out there who has used something they loved and would pass it on? I would like it to be Latin American if possible. Thanks so much!!!!
Get your children into a play group with Spanish speaking children. Children learn a second language easiest when there is a purpose for them to do it - a play group can be part of that purpose. Children will learn best in real life situations with real life purpose.
I’ve included a couple of links that look promising. Have fun!
I took spanish 1 this school year and I learned that the way to say I’m good is estoy bien because that means I am good. This is because of the whole conjugation thing of the verb estar. Anyway, I was watching a TV show and there were a few spanish lines that I picked up on and the characters were asking each other "Como esta?" and replying with "Esta bien." I thought that Esta bien means he/she is good. Is that the formal way of saying it and the slang is just esta bien?
Most likely you misheard, as you are correct.
